Title   Copper Ferns
By   Raymond Thompson
Description   Copper ferns dendrites grown in electrolytic solution while cathodic charging with a copper electrode. Copper-colored cloud appeared in solution and was extracted to determine what it might be. EDS showed it was 95% Cu and 5% Fe, the ferns were just pretty! Taken on Hitachi SEM 2640 in grayscale, the photograph was color adjusted in Microsoft Picture.

Title   Silver Cermet

Description   This thin film of silver cermet leaves visible facets when sintered on a ceramic substrate at 950 deg Celsius. The facets are caused by evaporation of silver which is close to it melting point of 960 deg Celsius. The film provides a conducting path on an insulating ceramic and has been imaged with differential interference contrast microscopy.

Title   Lightweight Steel Dendrites

Description   Optical micrograph of a Fe-29%Mn-9%Al-0.3%Si-0.9%C-0.4%Nb steel that was hot rolled and recrystallized. The microstructure consists of recrystallized austenite grains and annealing twins. Niobium carbides appear as bright contrast precipitates pinning recrystallized grains. The image was taken using differential interference contrast imaging and cross-polarized illumination. The specimen was etched with 5% nital and Klemm's reagent.

Title   Super Tiny Giraffe Found Grazing in Microscopic Jungle of Ni-Al-C Dendrites
By   Shaahin Amini
Description   SEM image depicts a baby giraffe formed within a jungle of Ni-Al-C dendrites. As the molten alloy was being solidified inside a graphitic crucible, the melt was decanted, leaving behind a little dendrite wetted by a thin molten blanket. The blanket eventually froze and rejected carbon, crystallizing as a graphite cover. The graphitic cover then wrinkled, due to its thermal expansion coefficient mismatch with metallic substrate, creating a faceted network of creases resembling a giraffe's skin patches.

Description   Electron backscatter diffraction reveals grain and phase morphology of dual-phase stainless steel LDX-2101. In this false-color image, austenite is red and ferrite is blue. Grains are shaded based on crystallographic orientation. The rolled material exhibits a columnar phase structure with packets of austenitic grains embedded in the ferrite matrix. (in collaboration with A. Poshadel)

Description   SEM Micrograph in EBSD Mode: Micrograph shows a Re-W-Ta-B based alloy cube (top left corner) interaction zone after liquid metal attack by superheated molten stainless steel (Fe-Cr-Ni-C) at 1800 degrees C per 6 minutes. The test was conducted in an induction furnace inside a graphite crucible under an inert argon atmosphere at 2atm absolute pressure.

这个帖子里的全部作品都是美国科技刊物JOM（矿物、金属和材料）杂志举办的2013年度金相摄影比赛获奖作品，有的是SEM照片，也有的是光镜下的照片。
这些美到冒泡的照片，震撼到我了，很难想象人家的创造力，忍不住想要分享给大家。

我在想：这些美到销魂的金相组织图片实在是有些浮夸，反应到现实，他们符合技术要求吗？
也许只有不合格的金相才能如此妖艳吧！

Title   Tectonics of TiC  碳化钛的结构

Description   Tectonics of TiC micrograph shows the surface morphology of the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy sample carburized at 1250oC temperatures under inert gas condition. It is observed that surface peak and valley for 6 hour carburization time indicates a compact and matured grain carbide formation.
